Lose Weight As a Now Vegetarian

|

By Louis Jeffries

Eat Healthy.

A Healthy diet is the secret to weight loss success. To many people the term "Vegetarian" implies someone who eats healthy. We envision all the types of far out, unheard of and little known healthy food that the normal person just would not eat. For a few vegetarians this is true. For most they eat like everyone else just avoiding meat. Meat alone does not cause us to gain weight unless we over do it. In fact the number one culprit in weight gain is sugar. Sugar as plain table sugar and sugar in all of its artificial forms are the number one cause of weight gain. Sugar is a simple carbohydrate that equals energy or just added weight. Because sugar is the number one food additive and the processed foods and flours are either simple sugar or converted to simple sugar once we eat it, we gain weight because of the excess of sugar in our systems. To lose weight we must first reduce these simple sugars. If possible we should completely avoid them and eat a healthy diet of fruit and vegetables, whole grains, seeds, nuts and beans. This Healthy diet is the key to weight loss.

Eat Vegetables.

This may seem obvious but it is important that we eat at least 4-5 servings of vegetables a day. Many vegetarians give up meat yet they eat everything but vegetables as their main source of nutrition. Vegetables should be number one, hence the name vegetarian. Fruit and vegetables should provide 60% to 70% of our caloric consumption. Since fruit is mainly for energy they contain more natural sugar than vegetables and that could cause weight gain or in the very least hinder our weight loss progress. We need fruit. We need vegetables and we need more vegetables.

Eat Fruit.

3-4 servings of fruit a day is recommended by the USDA and any less and we are depriving ourselves of needed nutrition and energy. If we eat too much more fruit we will begin to gain weight as many fruits are full of natural sugar. Too much sugar, whether natural or not, causes weight gain.

Eat Whole Grains.

Avoid processed foods. Avoid the unnatural processed cereal, rice, bread and pasta. Instead choose whole grain cereals, breads, rice and pasta. Processed foods process out the nutrition and add starch, sugar and preservatives. These are all equal a formula for weight gain and poor health. Whole grains like rice, wheat, oats barley etc. provide the natural nutrition God intended.

Eat Seeds, Nuts and Beans.

Seeds, nuts and beans all provide protein and other nutrition we miss when we do not eat meat. Really, seeds, nuts and beans provide more nutrition with less fat than meat. These help us get the nutrition we need avoiding the excess fat.

Drink Plenty of Water.

Not only is water good for all the organs in our body but water helps us to lose weight. A body that functions properly needs 8 to 10 glasses of water daily. Water helps increase our metabolism. Increased metabolism burns more calories. Water also helps our digestive system. Therefore we eliminate the toxic waste that can build up in our system. When you do not drink enough water you body retains water and thereby increasing your weight. Our bodies are two thirds water, even down to the cellular level. As such water is the key to all of our bodily functions. Yet many diets do little more than to reduce water weight which the body will begin to retain for survival mode and thus the weight will return.

Regular Exercise.

Regardless of what you eat if you do not exercise regularly losing weight is difficult. One way we lose weight by burning more calories than we consume. Exercise helps us to burn calories. When we give up meat we generally consume fewer calories if we eat properly. Like water if we do not have enough physical activity the body will retain fat. Our bodies react to our sedentary state and stores fat for the time that is needed. That time is when you exercise. Since we are programmed either to burn fat or store fat, regular exercise is the only way to ensure we are not in the "store fat mode".

Rest, Fresh Air and Sunlight.

Though mostly important for optimal health we need to rejuvenate our bodies to be most effective at weight loss. That is why sleep, fresh air and sunlight are so important to your weight loss program.

How to eat more Fiber

|

By Outarow Chuong

If you have put on some weight even after taking all precautions, you may just need to look at ways of how to eat more staple food so as to look into those extra pounds. The 80s saw the highly successful F Plan that promoted a diet containing high-fiber. Our comprehension of nutrition has grown by leaps and bounds since then, but eating of a lot of staple food still holds well with advice books and dietary experts.
So how to eat more staple food which is for your good? You can start by making sure you exceed all the minimum requirements. Four Crucial Advantages of Staple food in Health as also Dietary aspects are:

1. Staple food is more filling and does not make you hungry just within a few hours of a meal.

2. The eating of staple food at the time of initiating the diet and eating less food, can keep away constipation and similar bowel issues.

3. A fiber-rich diet assists in preventing heart ailments.

4. Fiber-rich food will fill you with lesser calories.

Sources of Fiber

We are aware of the most common sources from which we get fiber. There is a bran flake which is characteristically 6g fiber put in to a 40g serving, besides whole meal bread, which is 5.1g fiber put in to two slim slices. But there are plenty of other ways of how to eat more staple food:

1. Different varieties of beans, i.e. Baked beans or even kidney beans which have 7.9g fiber contained in half tin of beans that are usually baked.

2. Potatoes with the skin left on which has 4.8g fiber within some medium-sized potatoes weighing 300g.

3. The Wholegrain pasta is the distinction made between white as against wholegrain pasta and is not obvious as the dissimilarity involving white bread and brown bread. This has 8.1g fiber which is served in 90g dried weight.

4. Lentils are simply fantastic in pies, vegetarian dishes and soups. There is a 4.9g fiber content in 100g of lentils.

5. The Mixed fruits, seeds and nuts that is usually available in bags of snack-size. This is a characteristic mix that is 4.7g fiber within a 50g portion.

6. Raspberries are amazingly high in fiber with the count of 6.5g fiber contained in a 100g portion.

7. Crisp breads is considered a wonderful substitute to a sandwich with 4 crisp breads reporting 6g of fiber content.

8. The Oatmeal with some fresh or even dried fruit for enhanced fiber content. This has 3.5g fiber contained in 50g oats and 1.5g fiber within 25g raisins.

Eating healthy during the recession

|

By = Stephanie Herzog

One of the many unfortunate side effects of the current economic recession is the strain that people are feeling on their budget for food. Sure home-cooked meals are healthier and cheaper than eating out but even those who cook their own meals have been sacrificing good quality fresh vegetables and other ingredients for less healthy though cheaper items. As vegetarians how are we supposed to balance our shrinking wallets and the rising prices of food, namely fresh vegetables?

Health should be recession proof. Although we may have to adjust the way we spend everyday we should not sacrifice our own well-being. Here are a few tips for helping to stretch your dollar without giving up on nutrition:

Buy staples such as brown rice, dried beans and whole grain pasta in bulk. It will keep for a long time and you can cook the amount you need for each meal.

Steer clear of purchasing junk food. Eat more satisfying, healthier meals and you will be fuller longer. Also, a little leftover brown rice and some steamed veggies (cooked quickly in the microwave) will be more satisfying as a snack than a bag of over-priced cheese doodles (which are full of chemicals and little nutrition anyway).

Purchase bags of frozen fresh vegetables. These keep for quite some time in the freezer and are a great way to prepare a healthy stir-fry or veggie casserole without having to rely on purchasing huge quantities of fresh veggies.

Do you eat veggie burgers or any other forms of soy protein that come frozen? Check your local Sam’s Club or Costco for these in bulk and store them in your freezer. Bread can also be frozen so put some whole-wheat burger buns in the freezer too and pop one of these out with a patty whenever you are craving a sandwich.

Finally, search for vegetarian recipes that utilize basic ingredients or ones that can easily be substituted (green bell peppers for red or yellow example because the green tend to be more cost effective). Grocery stores usually offer pre-chopped mixes of green, red and yellow bell peppers too which will be much cheaper than purchasing all three fresh.

Finally, plan your meals in advance so that when you go grocery shopping you only purchase what you need and do not over-buy and end up letting some things go to waste.

Vegetarian Does Not Have To Be "All Or Nothing"

|
Many people contemplate becoming a vegetarian at one point or another. Some consider a meatless diet because they feel sorry for the animals. Others think a vegetarian way of eating will improve their health.
However, out of those well-intentioned people very few actually follow through and change their way of eating. The idea of completely giving up meat forms a big stumbling block for most.
For some reason, when it comes to vegetarian cooking, most people only see the "extremist" approach: either give up meat completely or you might as well include the meat in every meal. This "all or nothing" thinking becomes a mental barrier that keeps a lot of people from eating more vegetarian meals.
How about finding a happy medium? Drastic changes to one's diet never last. Do not beat yourself up for eating meat. There is no need to give it up completely. Just try eating a little less of it, that's all.
Start right now by making one meatless dinner every week. Keep everything else the same. Eating just one vegetarian dinner every week is definitely doable and easy. It will be just a nice change instead of deprivation!
If you think going meatless one day a week would not make a big difference, consider these simple numbers: if everyone ate vegetarian meals just one day a week, it would save one out of seven animals. Out of 92 million animals that are consumed in the United States alone every year, over 13 million animals would be spared. This is a huge impact!
In addition to doing good for our planet, you'll enjoy great health benefits by including more fruits and vegetables in your diet. Fruits and vegetables are rich in vitamins, nutrients, anti-oxidants and fiber - all the things that are good for us. They can help with weight loss and prevent diseases. Numerous studies show that diets high in fruits and vegetables reduce the risks of deadly diseases such as cancer, heart attack and stroke.
Also, by trying out new dishes, you will break your food routine and discover new tasty recipes and food combinations. It's really nice to eat something different once in a while instead of being stuck in a food rut.
This simple shift of mindset from "all or nothing" to a happy middle ground will do wonders. Vegetarian eating does not need to be a full-time commitment, sacrifice and strive for unattainable perfection. Just do what you can to eat a little less meat, have fun trying new vegetarian meals and enjoy the benefits.

Vegetarian Lifestyle - Yes, No or MAYBE

|

If you're considering moving to a vegetarian diet as an adult, you probably want to pass on this good nutrition and improved way of eating to your family as well. In fact, it's your responsibility as a parent to nurture your children and help them develop physically, mentally and spiritually.
But that can be hard to do, especially in a culture where our children are bombarded with messages from fast food restaurants in the media. How do you teach kids to resist the siren song of Ronald McDonald? There isn't a plate of vegetables on the planet that's going to look as good to them as a Happy Meal!
You have to start slowly to change not only your own eating patterns, but your family's as well. Like any other dietary endeavor, it starts at the grocery store. Begin stocking the refrigerator with healthy snacks like apples and carrots. Exchange good, chewy brown rice for white rice and processed side dishes, which are so high in fat and sodium. Make meat portions smaller and smaller and start incorporating more vegetables and grains in your family dinners.
Don't make changes all at once. If you do give in and stop at a fast food restaurant, get fruit or yogurt in addition to or part of that meal. Make the changes so gradual that they'll never notice their diets are changing. Kids are usually very sympathetic about animals, and it's not too early to talk to them about eating in a way that isn't cruel to animals.
You'll be doing them a favor that will last them a lifetime. With childhood obesity at epidemic levels in the U.S., you will be setting up your children for lifelong eating habits that will help ensure a long and healthy life.
If you've had a health scare and feel the need to change everything at once, make sure you include a lot of variety in the foods you buy as you begin to discover new flavors and textures that you'll like to replace the ones you're used to eating. If you don't need to make a dramatic change all at once, you'll have a much greater chance of long-term success if you take it slow.
Reduce the amount of red meat that you eat on a weekly basis, even if it means substituting pasta with marinara sauce for meat just one night a week. Increase the amounts of fruits and vegetables you eat. Start with raw vegetables at night before dinner so you're not so hungry when you get to the main meal. Start reversing the proportions of meat and vegetables and make meat a side dish, with vegetables and grains your main course.
We're creatures of habit and resistant to change. This is why so many diets fail, because we make drastic changes to facilitate dramatic results, quickly. This is a decision and a change you want to make for a lifetime. Make it a natural and gradual change and you can look forward to many more years of healthy living.

A Grain Of Meat For A Freshman Vegetarian

|
by: Austin Akalanze

Among freshman vegetarians there is the belief that it is difficult to meet the normal protein needs of individuals from a plant diet. This belief is born out the conviction among non vegetarians that protein comes primarily from animal products. Seasoned vegetarians however know better. They know that protein is available in plant products as much as it is in animal products. The trick is knowing where to look and they know that a good place to look is in wheat. The protein part of wheat has a substance called gluten. Gluten is the raw material for seitan. Popular among Chinese vegetarian monks and Mormons, seitan has been around for ages. Also conversant with seitan are Russian and Southeast Assian wheat farmers. While Seitan is important in the vegetarianvegan diet, making it can be demanding and time consuming. First of all, the gluten in wheat has to be extracted, washed and kneaded. This takes much time as the process is exacting. Gluten when extracted, seasoned and simmered in broth becomes seitan. It is this seitan that can then be cooked as desired. For the time pressed, it is encouraging to know that you can purchase ready made gluten. All that would be needed then would be to season to taste and knead. This is good, for then you can season to your taste and desire. A quicker alternative is to purchase pre seasoned seitan, and simply follow the manufacturer's cooking instructions for preparation. One limitation of commercially prepared seitan is that you are contrained to what seasoning is provided with the commercial seitan. Some of the more popular ready made seitan are made by White Wave Foods. Ivy foods is also known for its ready to eat style seitan products. DHAid™ - omega-3 DHA from a vegetarian source

|
DHAid™ is a pure vegetarian source of omega-3 docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). It is produced from microalgae in a controlled process in fermentation vessels. Due to its renewable sources DHAid™ is environmentally friendly. DHAid™ is allergen free and is free of potential contaminants that are discussed for seafood.
There are distinct types of omega-3 fatty acids that are ingested with the diet and used by the body. These are docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) as well as alpha-linolenic acid (ALA). Whereas ALA can be found most abundantly in foods, it has become clear that DHA is the most important omega-3 fatty acid for human health, particularly in the areas of brain, heart and eye health. It occurs naturally as a building block of cell membranes and contributes to membrane properties such as fluidity, flexibility and permeability. In respect of this background the uptake of DHA from the diet might be critical for maintaining adequate membrane DHA concentrations. Therefore, Health Organisations throughout the world have made specific recommendations to increase DHA levels.
In a study including more than 100 healthy vegetarians, 8 weeks of DHAid™ supplementation was found to significantly increase both their DHA and EPA plasma levels compared with placebo.
Using naturally occurring microalgae, Lonza’s innovative technology allows DHA oils to be produced with superior quality. During the unique production process in fermentation vessels, microalgae are grown in large volumes and accumulate significant quantities of DHA. Then, DHAid™ is extracted from the dried microalgae and refined in processes that are very similar to those used in the production of conventional vegetable oils.
Lonza is producing and offering DHAid™ in different forms: Lonza DHA FNO (Functional Nutrition Oil) is a food-grade oil which contains at least 40% DHA of total fatty acids. Lonza DHA FNO is best suited for use in food products, especially enriched foods. Lonza DHA CL (Clear Liquid) is a clear food-grade oil with at least 43% DHA of total fatty acids. Lonza DHA CL is especially developed for use in dietary supplements (soft gels), where the oil is visible in the capsules, but it can also be used in any other food application. Lonza DHA Dry is a free-flowing powder with at least 10% DHA. Specially developed for use in dry mixes, like powdered special nutrition beverages, the DHA is embedded in a matrix of casein and corn starch.

A Vegetarian Parent - Your Responsibilities to Your Children!!

|

As a parent it is your responsibility to pass on your knowledge on the benefits of a vegetarian lifestyle. You are convinced that a vegetarian diet will help control their weight, boost their energy levels and improve their health. Now you owe it to the rest of your family to pass on all you know about this improved way of eating to assist them to develop physically and mentally. You'll be doing them a favor that will last them a lifetime.
In saying that, it won't be easy to make immediate changes to their eating habits as it is difficult for them to resist the fast food restaurants where a "Happy Meal" looks much more inviting than any vegetarian meal no matter what health benefits it has. Although you know that a vegetarian diet helps fight against heart disease and obesity and that more than 300,000 Americans die each year from obesity related diseases, it takes a while to convince the next generation that healthy eating habits create healthy, energized people.
To overcome any resistance to the changes necessary to begin a vegetarian lifestyle, you have to start slowly for a smooth transition. Start out by committing to preparing a vegetarian meal three days a week for the first two weeks by replacing ingredients in their favorite dishes to make them totally meatless.
Once you feel you are making good progress, commit to five days per week for the next two weeks. Now, all that's left is to add two more days and you've done it. You've set up healthy, life prolonging eating habits that will be with them forever. Take pride in what you have accomplished.
You should not feel you are being preached at here, as you have already discovered the benefits of a healthy eating lifestyle compared to a meat-eating diet that is high in fat and cholesterol, deficient in carbohydrates and vitamins(except for B-complex). Plant based products are high in fiber and complex carbohydrates that reduce cholesterol levels thus reducing the risk of heart disease.
Vegetarian meals do not have to be boring and tasteless. To keep the family enjoying their new eating habits you will need to gain as much knowledge as possible to prepare a variety of scrumptious meat free meals that tantalize their taste buds.
It's never too late for the whole family to get started on a healthier lifestyle and to start feeling fantastic all the time.

The Lifestyle of A Vegetarian

|
Author: Paul Hata

One of the biggest injustices that the vegetarian movement has endured is that in popular culture, the image of a vegetarian is that of a fanatic hippy or cult member who is "off the deep end" and cannot think about anything else besides "saving a cow" and pushing vegetarianism on everyone he meets. The truth is that the lifestyle of a vegetarian is not that different than everyone else in the culture. In fact, the odds are that somewhere in your social circle at work, school, church or in your family and friends network, you already know several people who are quietly enjoying the lifestyle of a vegetarian. So to help us get over the negative stereotypes to understand how a vegetarian actually lives, lets examine what is different about a vegetarians life. The most significant difference in how a vegetarian lives is obvious because it is in how he or she eats. You will not find any meat in a vegetarian's kitchen. Now this doesn't mean that a vegetarian cannot live in a family and be at peace with meat eaters. If the home has one vegetarian but others who are not, you will be able to tell from the presence of soy and perhaps more fruit and fresh vegetables in the refrigerator. But the idea that vegetarians cannot be around meat eaters is false. If anything vegetarians are peace loving and can live their lifestyle around others who are not of their belief system very well.Grocery shopping with a vegetarian is an eye opening experience and one that is quite different in more ways than you would suspect. Being a vegetarian isn't just about what you don't eat in that you don't eat meat. It is also about a completely different approach to diet and foods. So you will not see a vegetarian buying food in the same way most people do. There will be much more time spent in the fresh produce section of the grocery store. The checkout basket of a vegetarian will give him or her away every time because it will be overflowing with fresh foods. But shopping for food with a vegetarian means shopping in other places than the local grocery store. It means buying grains and beans in bulk at a warehouse store because that is one way that a vegetarian maintains health by replacing the protein and other nutrients that the rest of the world gets from meat and replacing it with proteins from beans and other natural foods. It also means shopping in farmer's markets and even shopping in a vegetarian specialty store for some high nutrition meat substitutes like tofu. The vegetarian movement is in harmony with many of the earth first movements such as the organic movement and the green movement. So a vegetarian kitchen will have more organic foods on hand to reduce the presence of harmful pesticides and other substances in the diet. Also vegetarianism affects the lifestyle beyond just the refrigerator and the pantry. You will not find leather clothing in a vegetarian's closet and you wont find fur there either. That is became for the most part vegetarians are sensitive to animal rights and they don't want to see the skin of animals used in their clothing. The house of a vegetarian will also be a recycling house to do all that is possible to cut down on waste and to be earth friendly. Along with recycling bottles and cans as you might expect, a vegetarian recycles a lot right at home. A recycling home will often have a compost pile in the yard for food waste and it will also support a good sized garden to use that compost to grow at home organic foods to supplement a healthy diet. For obvious reasons, a vegetarian will have vegetarian friends and belong to social groups and attend functions that support the vegetarian lifestyle. Eating out with a vegetarian will mean going to more ethnic food restaurants and you will see a lot of creativity in how to order foods in a restaurant. But contrary to popular opinion, vegetarian eating is more flavorful and diverse than the normal diet. Just spending a day with a vegetarian will reveal to you a more harmonious lifestyle that is sensitive to the environment and at peace with itself. It is a healthy and happy lifestyle and one that should be attractive to all of
